María Espeus’s images take in and fix into place the unique character of the Raval (Barcelona) as well as its plurality, manifested not just in its people, but in its streets, businesses, objects and in its variety of atmospheres too. Some record for posterity a way of life that is on its way to disappearing while others are of a new one springing up on every corner. In all cases, these images are the markers that will allow us to take our bearings when we call this living stage up in our minds and journey back through it either now or way ahead in the future.
